Silver Spring is an unincorporated city of Montgomery County, Maryland stretching from the northern border of Washington D.C., up along the eastern edge of the County. While the dozens of neighborhoods making up Silver Spring encompass many square miles, the downtown and central business districts are relatively small in size. However, these downtown areas have become a hub for revitalization and growth. Spawned by the relocation of Discovery Communication's world headquarters, the area has gone through a major transformation throughout the past several years. Dozens of new restaurants have recently opened to include large national chains, as well as local ethnic flavors. There have also been many new shops, theaters, and businesses opening as well. With the presence of large employers such as Discovery and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and one of the most extensive local public transportation hubs (Metro, Ride-On Bus & Marc Commuter Rail), being at the center of downtown Silver Spring, housing has become in high demand. Several luxury condominium complexes have sprung up over the past several years, along with new upscale rental developments. Of course, there are also many residential neighborhoods surrounding downtown which combine the best of both suburban living and urban convenience. Additionally, downtown Silver Spring is home to one of Montgomery College's campuses and is extremely convenient to downtown D.C., Bethesda, and major transportation routes such as Interstates I95 and 495, as well as Georgia Avenue and Route 29.
